What the Panel Is
The CA-125 blood test measures the level of Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125) in your blood. CA-125 is a protein that may be elevated in ovarian cancer but can also be increased in a number of non-cancerous conditions. It is used to support the assessment of women with persistent symptoms that may be associated with ovarian cancer and to monitor women with an established diagnosis. CA-125 is not a screening or diagnostic test for ovarian cancer and should always be interpreted alongside your symptoms and, where appropriate, further investigations such as ultrasound.
Tests Included
CA125 is a protein that may be measured when assessing ovarian health. Raised CA125 levels can occur in ovarian cancer but are also commonly seen in many non-cancerous conditions including endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, menstruation and pregnancy. For this reason, CA125 is not used as a screening test for ovarian cancer in people without symptoms but may form part of a wider clinical assessment.
Important Pre-Test Information
- Note: If possible, avoid testing during your menstrual period, as CA-125 levels may be temporarily elevated. CA-125 may also be raised by non-cancerous conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, pregnancy and pelvic inflammation. This test may be appropriate for women with persistent symptoms such as ongoing bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, feeling full quickly or increased urinary urgency or frequency. If you have persistent or concerning symptoms, you should also seek medical assessment regardless of the result, as further examination or ultrasound may still be required.
