A focused assessment of CA-125
CA-125 is a protein that can be measured in the blood. It is commonly used as a tumour marker in the management and monitoring of ovarian cancer, particularly where a diagnosis has already been made.
CA-125 can also be raised in a number of non-cancerous conditions. These include endometriosis, fibroids, pregnancy and menstruation.
For this reason, a CA-125 result should not be used on its own to diagnose or exclude ovarian cancer and is not a screening test for ovarian cancer on it's own. Results need to be interpreted in the context of symptoms, medical history and, where appropriate, further clinical assessment.

A CA-125 test may be considered in the context of certain symptoms or clinical concerns. It can also be used under medical supervision when monitoring a known ovarian condition.
Important: CA-125 is not a stand-alone diagnostic test for ovarian cancer. An abnormal result can occur for reasons other than cancer, and further assessment may be required where clinically appropriate.
